Open Coil Mattresses
Open coil mattresses, otherwise known as coil sprung mattresses, are the traditional way in which mattresses are manufactured. Without realising you will probably be familiar with them already. They are firm and provide excellent support. In a standard double open coil mattress, there are an average of 300 coils and they are all connected by a spiral wire. As they are all connected, they essentially work as one giant spring to produce the desired effect of all the coils acting as one. This is the opposite of the springs found in pocket sprung mattresses where each one has the capacity to work independently. Due to low production costs, open coil mattresses provide a cost effective way of buying a mattress offering great support without breaking the bank!
Pocket Spring Mattresses
A pocket sprung mattress consists of a vast number of springs which are able to work independently because they have been individually housed within their own pocket. This enables them to have the capacity to support the weight that is exerted directly onto them, and to offer greater support to the heavier parts of your body. This will in turn relieve pressure points and create the feeling of tailored support. The springs are also significantly smaller than the ones found in traditional mattresses. On average, in an open coil mattress you can expect to find up to 300 springs, but in a pocket sprung mattress you can find up to 5000. With such a vast difference, you can appreciate the intricacy that has gone into developing these mattresses and the obvious benefits that this brings.
All Foam Mattresses
Memory foam is not like traditional foam; it reacts to body heat, so is able to mould to your sleeping position, and it will spring back to action with ease. It will offer great support without compromising comfort. This is great because as your body sinks into the mattress, the heavier parts of your body will receive better support, which will in turn relieve pressure points that can otherwise build. However, it is worth noting that memory foam is a non-breathable material and the dense cell structure actually restricts air-flow which can lead to an uncomfortably warm night’s sleep. Although this is a serious concern for many, it is now common for most manufacturers to combat this with their own different variations, with cooling agents and added airflow.
